Professor Patricia Campbell
Clinical Lead for Heart Failure, Northern Ireland; Medical Director R&D Southern Trust; Honorary Professor Queen’s University Belfast
Testimonial for HFWNI
“It is hard to imagine a time before we had the inspirational patient group of Heart Failure Warriors NI, so influential have they been. Their work providing support, care, information, teaching, social outlet opportunities, and a safe space to feel truly seen and heard has been transformational for many patients living with HF in our trust and all across NI. Not only that, but the team work hard in patient advocacy, including actively seeking out meetings and organising workshops with key stakeholders who dictate HF care in NI, and all across the UK.
In addition, their input has ben critical in improving patient and carer access to HF clinical research. Their reach extends beyond what words can describe, so let me instead describe my gratitude to them, which is unending - for their commitment, drive and passion, which has improved so many lives of our local people and indeed, of our entire team.”

“The absolute success of Heart Failure Warriors NI is a true reflection of a lifetime unmet need for patients, carers, family and friends of those within NI suffering from newly diagnosed, chronic and advanced Heart Failure. Over a period of 3 years, this charity and peer support group have enhanced the lives, emotional, psychological, social and physical difficulties for NI Heart Failure patients, family and carers. The dedication, enthusiasm and consistent charity development and innovation continues to improve month on month, year on year and this is a sole reflection of the inspiring committee members and non-committee members of the group. The group not only have a regional presence but national and international recognition. This is so incredibly vital when trying to help NHS Healthcare sectors improve Heart Failure care provision within a devolved nation when funding and auditing is not always reflective of the national platform.
HFWNI have been hugely influential in recognising the level of inequity of care across NI region for Heart Failure Cardiac Rehab patients and are involved in regional work to target this inequity. Their innovation practices and upcoming projects as a peer group are insightful. Members are always available and willing to provide help for the Cardiac Rehab service, providing group presentations and often act as a one-to-one support for many patients struggling.
From a Healthcare clinician perspective, we are so incredibly fortunate to have such an incredible group of individuals who manage and live their daily life with their own chronic condition which often has times of instability, whilst providing support for other patients, carers, family members and healthcare staff. Considering the increasing prevalence of Heart Failure in an aging population, I personally value having the leading Heart Failure Warriors within NI, no one will ever know when we might be contacting one of this groups non-medical specialists.
They are the true specialists in their own right!”
