Heart Failure Warriors NI attended the Amyloidosis Ireland International Conference 2025 which took place from 13th to 15th June at the Ebrington Hotel, Derry.  This event served as  a significant gathering for healthcare professionals, the patient community, caregivers, and families, with a particular focus on the rare condition of amyloidosis

The conference covered a wide array of topics, concentrating on the latest

advancements in treatments, diagnosis, and research related to amyloidosis.

Attendees engaged with presentations on various aspects of the condition, including the 'Donegal variant' and other forms of amyloidosis.

The overarching theme for the conference was 'Moving Forward', emphasising progress in understanding and managing amyloidosis.

Amyloidosis is a rare disease that occurs when a protein called amyloid builds up in organs. This amyloid build-up can affect the way organs work.

Amyloidosis may affect the heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, nervous system, soft tissue, muscle and digestive tract.

There are many different types of amyloidosis. Some occur with other diseases and improve with treatment. Other types may lead to life-threatening organ failure.

Heart failure and amyloidosis are closely linked, as amyloidosis can cause abnormal protein deposits in the heart muscle, leading to stiffness and impaired cardiac function. This condition, called cardiac amyloidosis, often results in restrictive cardiomyopathy and shares symptoms with heart failure, such as fatigue, swelling, and shortness of breath. Early diagnosis and treatment are vital for improving outcomes in affected patients.
