My Story

Hi, I’m Tommy, and I’m volunteering as IT Support for HFWNI. I’m originally from Co. Louth, but I’ve been living in Mullaghbawn for the past few years with my wife Gail and her daughter Gemma.

In January 2023, I experienced a sudden and unexpected shortness of breath at home. After visiting my GP, I was sent to Daisy Hill A&E, where I was initially diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation. Further tests at Craigavon Hospital revealed that I had Heart Failure, with an ejection fraction (EF) of just 20–25%, along with a leaky mitral valve. I spent just over two weeks in hospital, receiving excellent care.

Since then, I’ve been committed to taking my medication and making the recommended lifestyle changes. At my most recent follow-up, I was thrilled to learn that my heart function has significantly improved—my EF is now at 55%, and the valve issue has also improved considerably.

I’m incredibly grateful for the support of my family and friends, and I feel fortunate to have been diagnosed and treated so quickly. Being part of this amazing patient support group has given me the opportunity to share my journey and connect with others facing similar challenges.

Outside of HFWNI, I’m a passionate Liverpool supporter, I enjoy walking, and I love to travel—Nerja in Spain is one of my favourite places. I also started a new career in July 2025, which I’m really enjoying.

To anyone newly diagnosed with heart failure: stay hopeful. Things can and do get better.
